Player Name: Tyrone Vickery
Current Club: Richmond Tigers
Potential Club: Hawthorn has been the club linked to Vickery for the longest time and seems to be the restricted free agent’s club of choice, however, interest has come from Geelong and Adelaide as well.
The Original Price: Vickery was selected with pick 8 in the 2008 National Draft by Richmond.
The Good: At his very best he’s a match winner, we simply haven’t seen it enough from him. Vickery has strong hands, covers the ground well for a 200cm player and despite Richmond fans’ frustrations, he’s a good kick. In 2015, he kicked 31 goals and 9 behinds for the season. Perhaps the biggest upside for Vickery is his ability to compete in the ruck.
The Bad: He covers the ground well, but doesn’t find the ball when doing so, he averaged eight disposals a game this year and only 10 in 2014 and 2015. Perhaps it’s being Richmond’s whipping boy that brings this to the fore? At times frustration gets the better of him, highlighted by his four-week suspension for punching Dean Cox in 2014.
What His Club Wants: Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has stated that Vickery is in his plans for 2017 and beyond and that he is a required player but Vickery is a restricted free agent and will be able to leave is he so chooses. Richmond will consider matching the offer should it not yield an acceptable compensation pick, and force a trade.
What He’s Worth: Any club looking to fill the “David Hale role” would happily offer Vickery a two or three-year deal. Given his current salary, reportedly around $400,000 he’s a big investment.
What We’d Pay: If he was on the trade table: pick 30-35.
Possible Trade Scenarios:
- Richmond matches Hawthorn’s offer to Vickery as a restricted free agent. Richmond trade Vickery to Hawthorn for Billy Hartung.
The Verdict: It is almost a certainty that Vickery will elect to leave Richmond via free agency and join Hawthorn. What is not yet certain is Richmond’s reaction. Will they match the offer? If they do, a trade will have to be struck, something Hawthorn may find difficult given their other targets this trade and free agency period.
Star Rating: 3.5/5
He’s a prime candidate to fill the “David Hale role” at a number of clubs, including Hawthorn.
