Player Name: Pearce Hanley
Current Club: Brisbane Lions
Potential Club: The Gold Coast Suns are in the box seat to secure Hanley should he and the Lions both agree to a trade. It is reported that he would prefer to stay in Queensland to live near his brother, Cian, who is also on Brisbane’s list and that he has had a tour of the Suns’ facilities. Geelong is also interested in him.
The original price: Joined the Lions as an international rookie at the beginning of 2008, drafted with pick 38 in the 2008 Rookie Draft.
The Good: He’s a line-breaker off half-back and through the wing and an excellent user of the ball, not to mention one of the better Irish imports to play the game. Loves to run and carry, meaning his meters gained – the buzz word this year – are above average, has brilliant vision and hits the scoreboard both himself and through score assists.
The Bad: His on-field leadership hasn’t been the best in 2016, highlighted by his effort against Richmond in Round 14 where he hardly touched the ball, gave away free kicks and 50m penalties and looked generally disinterested. A new club, however, would give him a fresh lease on life as a footballer.
What his club wants: Brisbane would dearly like a first-round draft pick should Hanley request a trade and they may well get it if it’s the Suns who he chooses.
What he’s worth: A player’s worth is exactly what a club is willing to pay for him. While he’s probably only worth a second-round selection given his recent form and his age, the Suns have a number of first-round selections that they may be willing to part with in order to secure Hanley.
What we’d pay: A mid second-round draft pick, around 25-30.
Possible trade scenarios:
- Brisbane trade Hanley to Gold Coast for pick 14 (obtained from Hawthorn via a trade)
- Brisbane trade Hanley to Gold Coast for pick 21
- Brisbane trade Hanley & pick 28 to Gold Coast for pick 8
The Verdict: Pearce Hanley moving clubs is looking more and more likely everyday, but it will ultimately come down to the direction new Brisbane Coach, Chris Fagan wants to take the club.
