AFL Draft: Top 10 Picks

With the home-and-away season now officially over, the top 10 picks in the upcoming 2017 AFL Draft have been settled.

Brisbane will enter the draft with the number one selection, after they fell to North Melbourne in the final round in a result that saw them finish with the wooden spoon.

The win from North Melbourne propelled the Roos into 15th on the table, although it did see them miss out on a top three spot on draft night.

North will have to settle for the fourth pick, after they leapfrogged Gold Coast and Carlton on the ladder.

That means the Suns finished in 17th place and will have the second pick, while the Blues finished in 16th and now hold the third pick.

Rounding out the top five on draft night will be Fremantle, who won eight games in 2017 and finished 14th.

There was a big gap on the ladder between 14th and 13th, and while Collingwood finished in the higher position on the table, it may benefit them in the long run.

The difference in quality between Fremantle’s pick (five) and the Pies’ (six) won’t be too great, and Collingwood have also fallen into the bottom six of the ladder, which aids them due to the current fixture model in place as Pies’ fans hope coach Nathan Buckley can finally take the club into the finals. Teams are split up into three groups of six (1-6, 7-12, 13-18) and play at least two sides from their group twice, meaning the Pies could face up to three sides that finished below them twice, which could help them surge up the table in 2018.

However, St Kilda are possibly the best placed side draft wise this season, as the Saints have picks seven and eight after a pick swap with Hawthorn in last year’s trade period.

The Hawks were not anticipated to struggle so much this season which has been a blessing for St Kilda, who now have two picks inside the top eight.

Rounding out the top 10 are the Western Bulldogs with pick nine, and Melbourne – who missed out on the final by 0.5% – with pick 10.
