AFL Rookie Draft: How many picks will your club get?

The AFL Pre-Season and Rookie drafts get underway on Monday 28 November at 4pm. There is no live television broadcast for this event, and much less fanfare, but the list positions are still essential to each club rounding out their depth and development for 2017.

You might already know a bit about rookies since our in-depth Breaking down the barriers of Category B Rookies article was published, but there is also a Pre-Season Draft (PSD) for the final senior list positions before the rookie draft gets underway.

Essentially, the PSD is another chance for clubs to have another look at players who were passed over at the National Draft, and can choose to have between 38-40 senior listed players, with the remaining rookies pushing list totals up to 44 (before Category B rookies are included).

Clubs that already have 40 players will no participate in the PSD, however, those with 38 or 39 players can choose to pass their pick, thus opening up an extra rookie spot.

Lastly, some players who were nominated as “Next Generation” zone selections that are undrafted can be signed as Category B rookies. Clubs can have a maximum of 6 Category A rookies, and 3 Category B rookies.

Adelaide have two options: 1 player in the PSD and 2 in the Rookie Draft – or 3 in the Rookie Draft.

Like the National Draft, clubs will take their picks in reverse ladder order. Clubs no longer use the points system nor is there bidding for academy picks, while father/son picks do exist, only if a club has already committed to taking that player. There is also no trading of these picks. Clubs can promise an unpicked player that they will be drafted – such as Adelaide taking Ben Jarman – but until that name is read out, it’s fair game for anyone to pick them and anything can happen.
