Player Name: James Stewart
Current Club: GWS Giants
Potential Club: Stewart would suit any number of clubs on the lookout for a key position forward. He informed the Giants he wished to be traded to a Victorian club following which both Essendon and Carlton tabled offers, and it was reported late on Tuesday he had chosen the Bombers as his preferred destination.
The Original Price: Stewart was taken at pick 27 in the 2012 National Draft.
The Good: With only 18 senior games behind him after four years at the Giants it is hard to get a read on how good Stewart could eventually be. As a key position forward he has another couple of seasons until he comes into his prime, and could conceivably be a 10-year player at his new club. He has a good pair of hands and is fairly mobile, and while he will probably never be a number one key forward, he could end up a very solid second or third option.
The Bad: After four seasons Stewart has only played 18 games, and has never looked like cementing his place in the side. While that is a negative, it should be noted that he is behind a couple of guns in Jeremy Cameron and Jonathon Patton, and will not have that issue at either the Bombers or Blues. Stewart’s potential really is an unknown at this stage, so it really could be a case of boom or bust with Stewart.
What his club wants: Stewart is another one of any number of GWS draftees unable to cement a place in the side, and so has asked for a trade to another club in the hope of more senior opportunities. As a second round selection that has only managed 18 appearances in four seasons, the best the Giants could hope for would be a mid to late third round selection.
What he’s worth: Stewart’s value is hard to pinpoint with only 18 games to his name, but young key forwards can’t be picked up from the local store. At just 22 he could offer 10 years of service to his new club and a late-third round pick seems a fair return.
What we’d pay: Late third-round pick, around 52-56
Possible trade scenarios:
- GWS trade James Stewart to Essendon for pick 59
- GWS trade James Stewart to Carlton for pick 58
The Verdict: Stewart will be a handy pick up for either the Bombers or Blues. Essendon supporters, in particular, should be pretty excited about the possibility of Stewart and Joe Daniher forming a decade-long partnership if he can prove himself a reliable option.
