Player name: Cam McCarthy
Current club: GWS
Potential club: It looks almost certain that McCarthy will find his way to Fremantle. With the retirement of Matthew Pavlich, and Chris Mayne and Haydon Ballantyne set to leave the club it looks likely McCarthy will be at the forefront of a new look Dockers forward line in 2017. After the much publicised saga in the 2015 trade period GWS held firm against giving up McCarthy, even after he had requested a trade, and Fremantle were putting plenty on the table to secure him. With McCarthy wanting a move back to WA West Coast could also be an option, although there hasn’t been a great deal public interest in the young forward from the Eagles.
The original price: Going back to the 2013 national draft it was one where the Giants had taken Tom Boyd at pick 1 to add to Patton and Cameron who they already had, the Giants surprised with pick 14 and took Cam McCarthy. Leaving the Dockers at pick 18 scratching their head, and taking Michael Apeness instead of their original preference in McCarthy.
The good: The 21 year old booted 33 goals over the first 11 games of the 2015 season. Proving to the AFL world that he could grow into an elite AFL forward. His speed at ground level and marking ability make him a mobile forward with X factor. It’s no surprise Fremantle are so interested, as McCarthy at his best is what the Dockers are lacking up forward.
The bad: After not being traded to the Dockers McCarthy was granted indefinite leave after battling mental illness and anxiety issues. Homesickness was an issue in McCarthy wanting to return home to WA.
What his club wants: GWS head of football Wayne Campbell is on the record as saying that they’ll take the best deal for McCarthy, whether it be from Fremantle or West Coast. A twist in any trade scenario is that Fremantle don’t hold a second round pick in the draft.
What he’s worth: If this was 2015 it would’ve at least taken a first rounder to get a deal done for McCarthy. But having a year out of football and battling through personal issues has reduced his value down to a late second round pick.
What we’d pay: Late second round selection 32-36.
Possible trade scenarios
1. Fremantle trades pick 39 to GWS for Cam McCarthy
2. West Coast trade pick 29 to GWS for Cam McCarthy
3. Fremantle trade pick 3 for pick 7 and Cam McCarthy
It should be a straight forward transaction for McCarthy to leave GWS during the trade period. Fremantle are the most likely of suitors and should be able to facilitate a trade.
Star Rating: 3.5/5
This could wind up being one of the most underrated trades of the upcoming trade period. Sky’s the limit in terms of McCarthy’s potential, lets hope he can focus on his footy and get back to his best in WA.
