Player name: Kane Lambert
Current club: Richmond
No particular club has been mentioned.
The original price
Lambert was picked at No 46 in the 2014 Rookie Draft.
The Good:. Lambert was a standout in the VFL for a number of seasons before deservedly getting a crack at the big time with the Tigers. As someone who has had to fight hard to get where he is, the 24 year-old has tremendous perseverance, which is an asset any club would be after. Certainly knows how to find the contested footy, has a good turn of pace and can kick a goal.
The Bad: It is always hard to make up for lost time and so there will always be question marks over why it took him so long to make the grade. Lambert at 178cm and 75kg is undersized by today’s midfield standards and his disposal is not the cleanest. There also seems to be a large gap between his best and worst footy. Started 2016 in fine fashion picking up a career high 28 possessions along with eight marks and seven tackles against Carlton, but did not have another 20+-possession game for the seniors in 2016. Was in and out of the line-up in 2016 playing just 15 games despite the Tigers having a poor season.
What his club wants: Unknown at this stage.
What he’s worth: Despite only playing in the league for two years and 28 games in total, he has plenty of talent so a pick in the third round is not out of the equation.
What we’d pay
Third round pick 45-50.
Possible trade scenarios:
- Trade with St Kilda for pick 46.
- Trade with Brisbane Lions for pick 47.
The Verdict: Lambert had had plenty of setbacks on his road to the AFL and makes every game count. Has got to the point of his career where he would want a senior game most weeks. He would add a lot of value to a team like the Saints and the Lions who have a young midfield group and can pass on plenty of beneficial advice along the way.
