Player Name: Cam Ellis-Yolmen
Current Club: Adelaide Crows
Potential Club: Still only 23-years-old Yolmen is contracted until the end of 2017 and has been told that he is a required player. However, after managing only two senior games for the Crows, despite the departure of Patrick Dangerfield the out of favour midfielder is understandably assessing his options in an attempt to play more senior football. Yolmen was the only Adelaide player to make the SANFL Team of the Year and with youth on his side there are a number of clubs including Carlton, Brisbane, Fremantle, Essendon and Richmond lacking midfield depth who would crave the powerfully built 189cm and 92kg midfielder.
The Original Price: Ellis-Yolmen was taken with pick No.64 in the 2011 National Draft.
The Good: Kicking two goals in each of his two appearances this year Ellis-Yolmen illustrated his ability to hit the scoreboard. In his 11 games last year, his break out season he managed a season high 24-disposals and a season high 10 tackles. He has shown that he has the capabilities to play at the highest level and just needs more opportunity to build his aerobic capacity and ability to play more consistent football.
The Bad: Has been on the senior list for five years and has only managed 14 career games, he hasn’t had any major injuries and provides plenty of upside to potential suitors.
What his club wants: The Adelaide Crows have told the midfielder that he is a required player however if he did decide to seek a trade an appropriate draft pick would get the job done.
What he’s worth: Ellis-Yolmen is no doubt at the crossroads in his career, by seeing out his contract at the Crows he could let a significant opportunity slip with his size and ability to provide another dimension to most midfields sure to attract plenty of interest. A change of scenery could also provide the opportunity to become a more versatile player, his build the perfect size for a defender. Given his age and potential he has shown with minimal opportunity he no doubt has his best football ahead of him and has halved his original price value, commanding a pick in the mid to late thirty’s.
What we’d pay: Late second-round pick
Possible trade scenarios:
- Adelaide trades Cam Ellis-Yolman and pick 13 to Carlton for Bryce Gibbs and pick 41
- Adelaide trades Cam Ellis-Yolman to Essendon for pick 37
- Adelaide trades Cam Ellis-Yolman to Richmond for pick 42
The Verdict: Despite having a year to go on his contract the 23-year old may request a trade to a club where he will get the opportunity to play regular senior football. After five years on Adelaide’s list and just the two games this year nobody would begrudge that decision. However, he’s been open in stating he loves the Crows so it is likely that he will see out his contract and assess his options at the end of next season. That said rival clubs may not want to risk an improved season and a consequential higher price tag.
