Morrish Medal: Higgins Caps Stellar Season with B&F

Oakleigh midfielder Jack Higgins has won the 2017 Morrish Medal at last night’s TAC Cup awards ceremony.

Higgins polled 22 votes to take out the award from Calder skipper Brad Bernacki on 20.

The league medal is another gong Higgins can add to his swelling trophy cabinet. The East Malvern product won Vic Metro’s MVP and best and fairest awards during the National Championships, while also earning selection in the U18 All-Australian team.

Higgins is the first Morrish medallist Oakleigh has produced in its 23-year history. He says he is proud to receive the award and credited the Chargers program for his development as a player.

“It’s definitely an honour winning the medal, especially when heaps of [winners] before me have gone on to have really good AFL careers,” he said during his acceptance speech.

“I couldn’t have [won] without the coaches, the players, the people who put in the hard work, the people around me.

“Hopefully we can top [the year] off and go really deep in finals, hopefully get a couple of wins and bring a premiership back to Oakleigh.”

Higgins averaged 24 disposals, five marks and six tackles per game in the TAC Cup season. He also added 27 goals to firm as a first-round midfield/small forward prospect at November’s AFL national draft.

Geelong Falcon Gyran Miers was Vic Country’s highest poller with 15 votes. Miers finished in a tie for fourth with 19-year-old Sandringham Dragon Hamish Brayshaw. Brayshaw’s effort was especially impressive as he played just eight TAC Cup games, spending much of the season with Sandringham Zebras in the VFL.

Eastern ruckman Sam Mayes rounded out the top-five with 14 votes.

The league goal-kicking award went to Murray’s Daniel Johnston with 45 majors, while Oakleigh’s Jack Roughsedge won the Personal Growth Award.

The inaugural TAC Cup Girls awards were dominated by Calder’s Chloe Molloy, who won both the league best and fairest and goal-kicking prizes.
