Hill joins brother at Fremantle

The Trade:

Hawthorn trades Brad Hill; Hawthorn receives pick 23

Fremantle trades pick 23; Fremantle receives Brad Hill

The Brief:

Brad Hill requested a trade to Fremantle quite earlier in the year and it seemed inevitable that the trade would happen. Hawthorn and Fremantle had to get a few things in order first, but unsurprisingly, the deal is done. Hill will be happy with the outcome, he’s gotten to his preferred destination and will get to play alongside his brother, Stephen, at Fremantle. The larger ground in Perth will suit Hill, as he works the wings, feeding off of Lachie Neale, Nat Fyfe and David Mundy.

Club Trade Rating:

Hawthorn – when Hill requested the trade, Hawthorn were openly agreeable to getting the deal done. They should be happy, despite losing a quality ball user and some pace, they’ve got replacements lined up and need some bargaining chips at the trade table to secure them, a second-round draft pick does just that.

Rating: 0 – evens. We valued Hill around pick 25-30, so Hawthorn have gotten practically fair value for the midfielder.

Fremantle – the Dockers are going from strength to strength this trade period. They’ll have been in talks with Hawthorn regarding the Brad Hill trade for months and will have known the going rate. They’ll now move on to their two remaining trade targets.

Rating: 0 – evens. They paid fair value for Hill, and even better for the Dockers is that they were able to use the Chris Mayne compensation pick to get him.

Fantasy Impact:

Hawthorn – Hill was not a dominant figure in fantasy football in 2016 so there won’t be many points up for grabs here. The pacey type players with good ball use will benefit from him leaving, however. Perhaps it’s Isaac Smith who finds the ball in his hands more often, or perhaps a youngster such as Jono O’Rourke steps into a senior role in Hill’s absence.

Fremantle – Hill himself will benefit from returning to his home state and playing alongside his brother. He had some personal issues in Victoria and should be able to leave those behind and concentrate on football. The wide expanses of Domain Stadium will suit him, expect an uptick in his fantasy output.
