JACK-GRIMES

Jack Grimes – Market Value

Player Name: Jack Grimes

Potential Club: Suitors aren’t currently lining up for the defender, but he has been linked to the Lions, Kangaroos and Hawks recently. Take that with a grain of salt.

The Original Price: Grimes was pick 14 in the 2007 AFL draft, picked before the likes of Harry Taylor, Matthew Lobbe, Robbie Tarrant, Alex Rance and Scott Selwood.

The Good: Grimes was once the captain of the Melbourne Football Club. You’d assume that means they saw something in him. At his best, he was a capable rebounding defender who could organize a backline and push up the ground. He was named in Casey’s bests in 10 out of 11 games in 2016.

The Bad: He was named in Casey’s bests in 10 out of 11 games, but couldn’t get more than two games for Melbourne in 2016. Clearly, the club moved on from him and that will count against him at the trade table. His ball-use isn’t elite and there are obvious queries over his durability.

What his club wants: The club has no leg to stand on here. Considering they’ve chosen not to play him all year, they’ll have to take what they can get for their former captain. Who knows, the club might want to delist him.

What he’s worth: This is a situation where his worth could be anything from a nothing-pick to as high as a third or fourth rounder if he gets a few bidders. He could also be used by Melbourne as part of a deal with another club.

What we’d pay: Grimes, considering his injury riddled past and lack of game time in 2016 is worth a mid to late third round selection.

Possible Trade Scenarios:

  1. Grimes to Brisbane in exchange for pick 47 (Received from North Melbourne).
  2. Grimes to Hawthorn for pick 50.

Verdict: The Demons appear to have moved on from their former Skipper, as despite some excellent form in the VFL he just couldn’t get a look in. Grimes did show though in his two appearances this season he is more than capable of playing AFL football, picking up 32 disposals against Fremantle in Round 16. At 27 he still has a lot of football left in him, and could end up being a trade bargain for a club willing to give him a second chance.

Star Rating: 2.5/5

Unfortunately, Grimesy is not Homer Simpson and will need to continue wearing safety gloves when touching extremely high voltage objects.
