Player name: Josh Green
Current club: Brisbane Lions
Potential club: No strong speculation has been made linking the Lions small forward to any particular club. However it seems as though he’s open to a trade away from the Brisbane Lions. Green is sure to meet with Brisbane and new coach Chris Fagan to see whether he fits in. Small forwards are a position that the Lions have a surplus of with the likes of Lewis Taylor, Alan Christensen and Dayne Zorko all spending time up forward. Green may look to move away to somewhere for opportunity after losing his spot in the Lions team at times this year.
The original price: The Brisbane Lions selected Josh Green with pick 32 in the 2010 national draft.
The good: Green will attack interest from other clubs as he is a smart small forward with goal kicking prowess. The Lions small forward booted 82 goals in 53 games between 2013 and 2015 and led the 2014 goal kicking for the Lions with 33 goals. At only 24 Green has age on his side and could come in and fill a role for a club in need of a small forward.
The bad: Josh Green lost his spot in the side in 2016, somewhat due to form and in part due to being squeezed out by the Lions plethora of small forwards. Green played just 11 games in 2016 for a return of just 10 goals. He was out injured for some of the year, but the Lions likely won’t be pleased with Green’s goal return.
What his club wants: No comment has been made from the Lions in regards to what they’d expect for Green, once it’s decided whether Green will go or stay and if he nominates a club, only then will we find out what the Lions will expect for the small forward. The Lions are likely to want a pick in the 30’s or a player in return for Green, should he decide to leave.
What he’s worth: Green would expect a deal in the region of 2-3 years and considering he is contracted for another year a pick in the mid to late 30’s is probably on the mark for a player of Green’s ability.
What we’d pay: Pick 34-39
Possible trade scenarios:
1. Essendon trade pick 37 for Josh Green.
The Verdict: A trade for Green, given he is currently contracted, would be entirely dependent on his willingness to change clubs. But should a club take a chance and be able to get the best out of him he could be a good fit.
