Motlop looking to South Australia

There’s no doubt that Steve Motlop has x-factor, the problem is his consistency and how it affects his value. Though he had an excellent finals series, showing intense pressure and work rate, particularly in the Sydney game he’s gone missing for Geelong far too often over his career. He’ll be 27 by the time the 2018 season begins so has four or five years to make an impact at a new club and given the enormous upside, it’s a risk worth taking for a club in the premiership window.

PLAYER VALUE: Second round pick.

POSSIBLE DESTINATIONS: Three clubs have emerged in the race for Motlop’s signature – Gold Coast, Adelaide and Port Adelaide – with the South Australian clubs leading the way. Port Adelaide have already added some midfield grunt through Tom Rockliff but Motlop’s class and pace on the outside certainly fills a need for the power. The question will be whether Port Adelaide have space in the salary cap to match the offer from Adelaide. The Crows will be looking to add another creative forward come midfielder as they look set to lose Charlie Cameron either this year or next and have reportedly offered Motlop upwards of $600k for his signature.

MOST LIKELY LANDING SPOT: Too hard to tell at this point. The money on offer from Adelaide would be hard to pass up. He’ll fit in well at the Crows who are right in the premiership window after having played in the AFL Grand Final this year. On the other hand, Motlop has a family connection with Port Adelaide who’ve put a lot of work into the recruitment of Motlop to date.
