Player Name: Jarrod Pickett
Current Club: GWS Giants
Potential Club: Pickett has officially requested a trade to Carlton.
The Original Price: GWS drafted Pickett with pick 4 in the 2014 National Draft.
The Good: Pickett was highly rated in his draft year as a small forward who was clever around goals. He tested well at the Draft Combine in 2014, particularly for agility and endurance. He kicked 26 goals from 17 games in the NEAFL last year and was in fine form in early 2016 before injury struck.
The Bad: A lisfranc injury sidelined Pickett for much of the 2016 season and as a result, he’s yet to play a senior game. The biggest knock on Pickett has been his fitness.
What His Club Wants: In a similar vein to Caleb Marchbank, GWS will want fair compensation for the highly rated former number 4 draft pick. The Giants want to move up the draft order in the first round so would probably prefer to package up Pickett and Marchbank for Carlton’s pick 5.
What He’s Worth: He’s one of few genuine small forwards on the market which does nothing to hurt his value, and the fact that he was taken two selections higher than Caleb Marchbank is a bonus for GWS as well. A late second round selection seems around right for a player who’s yet to play a game.
What We’d Pay: A mid second-round draft pick, around pick 27-31.
Possible Trade Scenarios:
GWS trade Pickett to Carlton for pick 36 (from Geelong)
GWS trade Pickett to Carlton for their 2017 second-round draft pick.
GWS trade Pickett, Marchbank, James Stewart and pick 16 to Carlton for pick 5.
The Verdict: With GWS wanting early draft picks and being required to cut the size of their list down, a trade for Pickett will get done, it may just be tied in with the Marchbank trade.
