Current Club: Hawthorn Hawks
Potential Clubs: West Coast. The Eagles want Mitchell to play in 2017 and coach beyond that. Mitchell has confirmed that he’s open to the idea.
The Original Price: Mitchell was drafted with pick 36 in the 2001 National Draft. Hawthorn acquired the selection used to draft Mitchell as part of the Trent Croad/Pick 1 trade.
The Good: Ex-Captain, four-time premiership player, five-time club Best & Fairest winner, three-time All Australian and Rising Star winner. Sublime ball user on both sides and brilliant football smarts, he sets up play so often and so well.
The Bad: The knock throughout his career has been his pace, although it hasn’t affected his ability to play well for Hawthorn. His age is the only other detractor, he’s 34 years old and may only have one or two years left.
What His Club Wants: Hawthorn need help getting the Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell deals done. Whether that’s draft picks or players, like the Suns have requested. They’ll expect a high draft pick in return for Mitchell that they can on trade to Gold Coast or Sydney.
What He’s Worth: It’s a tough one to gauge, he’s one of the greatest Hawthorn players of all time and their most recent Best & Fairest winner so he’s still in fine form. He’s worth a first-round pick off that alone, but given he’ll likely only play for one year at the Eagles he’ll come a lot cheaper than that.
What We’d Pay: A late second-round draft pick, around 34-38.
Possible Trade Scenarios:
- Hawthorn trade Mitchell to West Coast and pick 14 to Gold Coast; West Coast trade Chris Masten to Gold Coast; Gold Coast trade Jaeger O’Meara to Hawthorn.
- Hawthorn trade Mitchell to West Coast for pick 33
Star Rating: 5/5
Although they’re open to it, Hawthorn wouldn’t trade Sam Mitchell unless they feel that they can get a reasonable return for him. They need either high draft picks or established players to offer Gold Coast for Jaeger O’Meara.
