GWS trades James Stewart; GWS receives pick 77
Essendon trades pick 77; Essendon receives James Stewart
Stewart requested a trade to Essendon just days ago and the Bombers have obliged. Stewart will like his chances of playing senior football in 2017 and will relish the opportunity after only cracking the Giants senior team for one game this year. As a solidly built key forward, he’ll be the perfect foil for Joe Daniher and at only 22 years of age they could form a lengthy partnership.
Club Trade Rating:
GWS – Stewart was originally taken as a second round selection, so even though he could hardly be described as a regular senior player with just 18 senior games behind him after four years, it is still a decent loss. Pick 77 provides the Giants with no points and four seasons of developing Stewart wasted.
Essendon – The Bombers have done extremely well in this deal. They get a 23 year old key position forward for essentially nothing, and he won’t command a huge salary. If it works out, they have a formidable tall forward pairing in he and Daniher, and if it doesn’t they really haven’t lost anything.
Essendon – No doubt Stewart will get more senior opportunities at the Bombers, and given that his own fantasy average should improve. Daniher’s could possibly suffer as he will be sharing the forward line with another tall target, but could also improve with having the same man alongside him week in week out. Mitch Brown is another whose fantasy output could be affected as he could be competing for that second-tall forward position with Stewart.
GWS – Stewart’s departure will have little if no impact on the Giants from a fantasy perspective. As a fringe player he was really only used as a back-up so was keeping no-one else out, while as he made only one senior appearance in 2016 him leaving will have absolutely no fantasy effect on the Giant’s players next season.
