The Bendigo Pioneers defeated the newly named GWV by two goals in cold and blustery conditions in Ballarat on Sunday. The GWV outfit will be ruing missed chances and going too short by foot in the last quarter. The game was a bruising encounter with both sides ‘cracking’ in at the ball but it was the cream that rose to the top from the Pioneers that made the difference in the end. The Pioneers entered their forward 51 times compared to GWV 48 times and as a result managed to have a lead of 12 points when the siren sounded. GWV were lead by their inspirational captain Callan Wellings who worked tirelessly through the midfield for his team. Pocket dynamo Brent Daniels kicked 4 goals for the Pioneers , marking everything that came his way, and at 172cm is an exciting player to watch.

This week I thought I might look at the  Top Age Boys from each team in calculations for the VIC Country Squad.

Paddy Dow | Bendigo Pioneers

MID | 16/10/1999 | 184cm | 78kg

Dow ended up with over 20 possessions and used the ball well. He has developed his kick over the off season and has a great burst of speed from the mid field. I see his stocks rising after the first two rounds. He will slip easily into the Vic Country Midfield. I see Dow as a prospective top 10 choice in the 2017 draft.

Lochie O’Brien | Bendigo Pioneers

MID | 18/09/1999 | 184cm | 75kg

O’Brien collected 26 possessions on the weekend and his raking left foot kick is damaging. A track and Field Champion, O’Brien has pace to burn. He is tough and uncompromising but plays his best football on a wing or off a Half Back Flank. O’Brien will be 1-5 in this year’s draft.

Kane Farrell | Bendigo Pioneers

Mid/Fwd | 17/03/1999 | 180cm | 72kg

Farrell has been relatively quiet in the opening two rounds. He is the best kick in the competition but needs to get the ball in his hands more than 10-15 times a game. Presently playing as a half Forward, his best work is done off a half back flank and I would like to see him return to that position. Could be an asset for Vic Country in the back half. Farrell is in the draft range 20-40

Darby Henderson | Bendigo Pioneers

Mid | 13/03/1999 | 176cm | 72kg

A tough inside mid, Henderson has collected not only big numbers in the first two games; 22 and 25 but finished in the top 3 possession winners in the TAC Cup in 2016. Has great hands and has the ability to be involved in scoring opportunities for his team. See him playing on a wing or even half back for Vic Country. Draft range 50-60

Brent Daniels | Bendigo Pioneers

Fwd | 09/03/1999 | 172cm | 70kg

The 172 cm Daniels is an excitement machine. His father Greg played senior football for Collingwood in the 80’s so has good pedigree. Has become the most dangerous small forward in the competition and can also provide rebound in the back half. I see him playing the small forward role for the Vic Country side. Draft Range 40-60

Tom Campbell | Bendigo Pioneers

Fwd | 18/08/1999 | 192cm | 88kg

Campbell had an injury interrupted season last year and showed what he is capable of in the round 1 clash V Bushrangers. Despite a quieter showing on the weekend he did his job. Campbell will need to perform well this weekend to push his name in front of the Vic Country selectors. Draft Range TBC

Angus Schumacher | Bendigo Pioneers

Def/Mid | 16/03/1999 | 189cm | 76kg

Schumacher really developed his game last year and has been very steady in the first two rounds. I believe that he could play as a tall half back for Vic Country and has the tools to be a very good TAC Cup player. Obtained solid numbers on the weekend but needs a stand out game to take the next step. He has the ability to play well at the next level. Draft Range TBC.

Callan Wellings | GWV Rebels

Mid | 20/02/1998 | 181cm | 71kg

Played a brilliant game on the weekend racking up over 35 possessions. His agility and movement through traffic was exceptional and his ball use was excellent. Wellings is 19-year-old who should command a place in the Vic Country Squad. I see him as a draft choice between 40-60.

Aiden Domic | GWV Rebels

Mid | 16/07/1999 | 185cm | 81kg

Domic a physically imposing midfielder who has plenty of tricks. I would like to see him get higher numbers but he is tough inside player who does a heap of hard work for his team. I see him as a wing type for Vic Country and is in the frame for the draft and should be picked up in the 30’s if he plays good football.

Jordan Johnston | GWV Rebels

Fwd | 09/09/1999 | 184cm | 76kg

One of the best forwards in the competition, Johnston had a quiet day on Saturday. Nevertheless, he can destroy opposition sides and kick quick goals in succession. I see him as a player that should be able to have an impact as a forward for Vic Country. He has many draftable attributes but most likely will be taken between 20-40 if he strikes some consistent form.

Will there be anyone else writing scouting notes for the Pios this season? If not could we have some credentials re John Bradman? Seems to be a discrepancy between who this writer lists as in the best players and who is listed as best on the TAC webpage.
