TAC Cup Scouting Notes: Pioneers quash the Rebellion

There were two games played between the Bendigo Pioneers and the newly named GWV Rebels at Epsom on Sunday. The first game had a couple of standouts with Aiden Domic being the best performed player in that match. The second game saw a very strong Pioneers outfit that included names such as Dow, Brander, Daniels, Farrell and bottom age All Australian Jye Caldwell outpoint a disappointing GWV Rebels. There was no doubt that the Rebels missed players such as Berry, Meek and Domic in this game.
In the end, the Pioneers had too many avenues to goal in a scrappy affair, with Coby McCarthy kicking four goals for the victors.

Final Scores:

Bendigo Pioneers 15.6.96 beat GWV Rebels 2.2 14
Goals Bendigo Pioneers: McCarthy 4, Daniels 2, Fitzgerald 2, Brander 1, Denahy 1, Turner 1, Henderson 1, Atley 1, Harvey 1, Farrell 1
Best Bendigo Pioneers: Dow, Daniels, Henderson, Fitzgerald, Farrell, McCarthy
Goals GWV Rebels: McRoberts 1, Gattek 1
Best GWV Rebels: Wheeler, Bull, McRoberts, Beddison

Dow was brilliant early in this game giving the Pioneers great drive from the middle of the ground. His clearance work and movement in tight was exceptional. He appears to have bulked up and his kicking into the forward line appeared to be much better than 12 months ago. Dow is a hard player to tackle and his pace from the stoppages gives the Pioneers a great advantage. Despite Dow only playing a bit over half a game he finished with 14 disposals and his impact was significant.

Forward/ Mid | 172cm | 74kg | BENDIGO PIONEERS

Despite his lack of height, Daniels is a class player with great goal sense and footy smarts. He kicked the first two goals of the game and was dangerous when the ball was on the ground. Daniels has pace to burn and his agility and ability to cut the lines is top class. He is a highly skilled player who can also roll through the midfield and defence. He missed most of last season with a knee injury but he appears to be back to his best. Daniels finished with 15 disposals and appears to have a big year ahead of him.

Mid | 178cm | 75kg | BENDIGO PIONEERS

Last year’s joint runner-up in the Pioneers Best and fairest, Henderson accumulated plenty of the ball, racking up an impressive 27 disposals. His work in close with his hands was excellent setting up his teammates on the outside. He has a nice mix between inside and outside ball and is a running machine. Has developed a very consistent game and still has some development left in him.

HBF/ MID 176cm | 74kg | GWV REBELS

In my opinion, Wheeler could turn into a star at this level over the next two seasons. He has a terrific mix of determination, skill and fitness and was a standout for the Rebels off a Half Back Flank. Predominantly a left footer, Wheeler can use both sides of his body when under pressure. He set the Rebels up out of the back half with his neat disposal. I believe Wheeler is a player that can have an impact as a bottom age player in 2017. Wheeler finished with 18 touches.

Mid/Fwd | 178cm | 78kg | GWV REBELS

Bull worked very hard throughout the middle of the ground during the first half. He is a well built contested ball player who provides ‘outside’ opportunities for his teammates. Bull really flew the flag for the Rebels and may develop into a good ‘inside mid’. Bull went forward late in the game and was lively and looks like the type of player who finds the ball easily. Bull had 20 disposals for the day.

HBF/Wing | 181cm | 75kg | GWV REBELS

Beddison caught the eye with some great dashes off Half Back and through the middle of the ground. He has the pace to break the lines and could be a player that has an impact at TAC level as the year progresses. Beddison is an exciting player with a good skill set who could provide some real drive for the Rebels during the season. I see Beddison as a Half Back/ Wing type player in 2017.

Hey Prez. The great thing about a game of footy is that we all have opinions. Harvey is a 19yr old and most likely won’t be regarded as draftable. Caldwell was very quiet and is bottom age. I had stats taken on 6 major players all that are in this years window. The conversations that I had with recruiters and managers back this article up. FYI, I think my knowledge of football is very extensive. Good luck

Thanks JB. You should look at becoming a coach with your extensive knowledge. But stay out of a bank you will send them broke the way you count.

Will JB be reporting on all the Bendigo Pioneers games ? As I don’t think he knows what he is talking about !
Maybe you could get someone who actually has been involved in the game. Or can count for a start.

Hoping that there will be other “scouts” reporting the Pios games. Differences in stats and best players from TAC page. Best players are opinions, stats are not
