In round 22 of the WAFL Colts competition, West Perth defeated Subiaco by 23 points at Leederville Oval on Saturday morning.

Below were the best players of the game.

SUBIACO

TOM EDWARDS-BALDWIN | MIDFIELD | 182cm | 76kg

The hard-nosed midfielder was at his tough and combative best against West Perth. He finished the game with 24 possessions (12 contested), a game-high seven clearances, five marks, three inside 50s, two tackles and a goal. His inside work in the stoppages was excellent and his desire to never shirk a contest was again on full display.

KYRON HAYDEN | MIDFIELD | 185cm  |88kg

The raging bull again demonstrated why he is such a highly rated prospect. He accumulated a game-high 29 possessions (17 contested), laid five tackles, rebounded the ball out of defensive 50 five times, took four marks, won four clearances and recorded three inside 50s. His ability to perform the “don’t argue” in tight situations is eerily similar to the way Dustin Martin and Sam Powell-Pepper break tackles.

LIAM HICKMOTT | MIDFIELD | 176cm | 67kg

The potential Carlton father-son recruit provided the usual grunt work Subiaco has come to expect from him. Although not as prolific as in previous weeks, Hickmott was a star in the stoppages for the Lions. Of his 16 possessions, 11 were contested and he also laid a team-high nine tackles.

MITCH HUGHES | KEY DEFENDER | 189cm | 91kg

The key defender was outstanding for the Lions in the defensive half. Stationed on the dangerous Kurt Monaghan (who is currently eighth in the WAFL Colts’ Leading Goalkicker Award), Hughes was able to keep Monaghan to just seven possessions and no goals, while he gathered 13 possessions and took three marks in a sensational display.

KYLE STAINSBY | SMALL DEFENDER | 181cm | 68kg

The small defender has been a revelation for the Lions in season 2017 and he continued his remarkable form against West Perth. He gathered 11 possessions (seven contested), laid six tackles, took two marks and got the ball inside attacking 50 twice. With more growth still left in him, expect Stainsby to become a top prospect for 2018.

WEST PERTH

SLADE HAWKINS | RUCK | 197cm | 85kg

The sixth ranked ruckman of the competition continued his excellent form with another fine display. He gathered 12 possessions (seven contested), won a game-high 37 hit-outs, took eight marks, laid four tackles and recorded two inside 50s in a best afield performance.

LACHLAN JOHNS | MIDFIELD | 184cm | 75kg

The Joondalup-Kinross junior was exceptionally busy in the midfield for the Falcons. He finished with an equal team-high 27 possessions (12 contested), won an equal team-high six clearances, took five marks, recorded four inside 50s and laid three tackles in a sensational display.

TYRESE MILLER | SMALL FORWARD | 182cm | 85kg

The 2014 AFL Flying Boomerangs squad member showcased why AFL clubs nominated him for the WA State Combine. His flair and football smarts in the forward line proved to be too difficult for the Subiaco defenders. He finished with 16 possessions (eight contested), five marks, four inside 50s, three score assists and four goals.

NATHAN MURRAY | MIDFIELD | 174cm | 66kg

The 17-year-old was at his brilliant best against the Lions. He finished with an equal team-high 27 possessions (11 contested), took seven marks, recorded three score assists, two inside 50s and a goal in another dazzling display.

DYLAN YEM | SMALL FORWARD | 172cm | 68kg

The small forward was electrifying in the front half for the Falcons. He only gathered 10 possessions but they had high impact. He recorded four inside 50s, and kicked four goals to be another damaging player forward of centre. Expect him to have a long career with West Perth.

  • Highly rated prospects Oscar Allen (West Perth), Brayden Ainsworth (Subiaco), Ben Miller (Subiaco) and Connor West (West Perth) did not play at Colts level.
