Will Charlie be a Lion?

Late and rookie selections seem to be an Adelaide Crows speciality. The club’s recruiting staff knows how to find a diamond in the rough, which is exactly what happened when they drafted Charlie Cameron in the 2013 Rookie Draft. The excitement machine has played 73 AFL games in his four seasons, including a breakout game in this year’s preliminary final. The rumours of him wanting to play for Brisbane for personal reasons have been present for most of this season. If we are to believe everything that is said during the trade period, there is no chance Adelaide are trading him. Cameron won’t re-sign with the Crows beyond 2018 if they don’t trade him. It’s a nice little standoff that is sure to end sooner rather than later.

What he’s worth: Cameron is worth one of Brisbane’s many first-round picks in this year’s draft. Pick 18 looks the most reasonable. Adelaide should be happy to receive such a high return for a rookie selection.

Destination: Brisbane is the only club Charlie Cameron wants to play for in 2018. The 23-year-old was born in Queensland and wants to return to the state to play his senior footy. Gold Coast is far from an attractive option at the minute, however, the link with Brisbane has lasted far longer than the Suns’ recent woes.

What he adds to the Lions: Brisbane should look to use Cameron in the midfield at times, with his unmatchable pace providing a unique and dangerous clearance option. In his limited opportunities in the midfield at the Crows, he proved to be a damaging player running between the arcs. Ultimately though, Cameron looms as a key contributor to the scoreboard. The Lions need more goalkicking options, and he should push the 35-40 goal mark given Eric Hipwood will bring a lot of ball to ground. If Cameron were to average 15 disposals and five tackles per game, while also kicking 35 goals, he’ll be great value for an end-of-first-round pick.

Will the deal get done? Yes. Adelaide was expected to land Steven Motlop, who would have been a direct replacement for Charlie Cameron. The fact that they haven’t landed Motlop makes a trade less appealing to Adelaide but they should still cash in on Cameron. The player doesn’t want to be at the club and they are getting a huge return on initial investment. Charlie Cameron will be a Brisbane player in 2018.
